Description

This is a Civics and Citizenship unit, for digital downlaod, supports the requirement that students discuss social issues, suggest solutions and plan possible action for Year 3 upwards. It promotes the idea of the Thoughtful Citizen, who is aware of the complexity of decision-making at various levels, is respectful of others and prepared to act responsibly. Each school subject has its own distinctive critical questions which tend to recur frequently (e.g. in Science, such a question is ‘Was this a fair test?’). The critical question for Civics and Citizenship is What is in the best interests of society as a whole, as opposed to the interests of individual citizens? In the national goals this is stated as “have empathy for the circumstances of others and work for the common good”. THE AIMS OF THE UNIT • To build knowledge about Indigenous culture and respect for Indigenous viewpoints • To have students consider the larger ongoing question about Reconciliation • To encourage critical thinking about news reports on social issues • To develop skills of civil conversation and accountable talk when discussing social issues • To learn about Thinking like a Citizen and the complexity of decision-making • To have students think ethically and with intercultural understanding as per the General Capabilities.
